Evolutionary Map of the Universe : Tracing Clusters to High Redshift

چکیده

The Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP) is a new radio-telescope being built in Western Australia. One of the key surveys for which it is being built is EMU (Evolutionary Map of the Universe), which will make a deep (∼10 μJy/bm rms) radio continuum survey covering the entire sky as far North as +30◦. EMU may be compared to the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS), except that it will have about 45 times the sensitivity, and five times the resolution. EMU will also have much better sensitivity to diffuse emission than previous large surveys, and is expected to produce a large catalogue of relics, tailed galaxies, and haloes, and will increase the number of known clusters by a significant factor. Here we describe the EMU project and its impact on the astrophysics of clusters.

Characterizing the Cluster Lens Population

We present a detailed investigation into which properties of cold dark matter halos make them effective strong gravitational lenses. The cross sections for giant arc formation of 878 clusters from a high-resolution N-body simulation of the ΛCDM cosmology are measured by ray tracing through 13,594 unique projections. We measure concentrations, axis ratios, orientations, and the amount of substru...

Constrained Simulations of the Magnetic Field in the Local Universe and the Propagation of UHECRs

We use simulations of large-scale structure formation to study the build-up of magnetic fields (MFs) in the intergalactic medium. Our basic assumption is that cosmological MFs grow in a magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) amplification process driven by structure formation out of a magnetic seed field present at high redshift. This approach is motivated by previous simulations of the MFs in galaxy clus...

THE COMPLEX STRUCTURE OF THE Cl 1604 SUPERCLUSTER AT z 0.9

The Cl1604 supercluster at z = 0.9 is one of a small handful of such structures discovered in the high redshift universe, and is the first target observed as part of the Observations of Redshift Evolution in Large Scale Environments (ORELSE) Survey. To date, Cl1604 is the largest structure mapped at z ∼ 1, with the most constituent clusters and the largest number of spectroscopically confirmed ...

Observations of Groups and Clusters – A Relic of the High Redshift Universe Richard

I review the evidence from clusters and groups of galaxies for 'relic' evidence of the high redshift universe. Contrary to the received wisdom, clusters are old. Their x-ray emitting intergalactic medium in massive clusters is a reservoir of metal and energy injection from the main epoch of star formation. There are strong indications that non-gravitational energy was extremely important in the...

Determining the Geometry and the Cosmological Parameters of the Universe through SZE Cluster Counts

We study Sunyaev-Zel’dovich Effect (SZE) cluster counts in different cosmologies. It is found that even without the full knowledge of the redshift distribution of SZE clusters, one can still readily distinguish a flat universe with a cosmological constant from an open universe. We divide clusters into a low redshift group (with redshift z ≤ 0.5) and a high redshift group (with z ≥ 1), and compu...
